Fat Fun Mirrors

Executed by Escala, São Paulo, Brazil.

This ambient advertisement was placed in movie theaters all around Brazil in October 2010 to promote the new movie "Gorda." The premise of the story is a man who falls in love with a fat woman and has to face prejudices when they are in public together. The mirror is a playful way to spread awareness of the movie.

I am very impressed with the idea and think it is a great interactive piece. I keep reading posts about how the mirror might offend obese people or others suffering from anorexia. It is always important to consider such audiences, however I think that in order to be successful, you have to lean toward a majority demographic here. Especially in a country such as Brazil. The stereotyped Brazilian is not too fat or too skinny. I'm sure most of the public is amused by such a visual. And even if some of them find it offensive, tough luck! That's what the story is about, an overweight female. Stop being so sensitive!

  1. I see the point in making people fat to get a feel for how fat people feel, or how the character in the film feels, but at the same time I feel as if this could turn people away from the film skinny and fat alike. The mirror idea is good, but the concept isn't.
